Lubāna Lake – the largest lake in Latvia
In Madona district, there is also a part of Lake Lubāns, the largest lake in Latvia (14 km long and 9 km wide) which also serves as one of the most popular bird-watching spots in Latvia; during migration periods there are about 20,000 waterfowls in the area, as well as favourite fishing area. The Lubāna Lake formed about 10 to 13 thousand years ago, its shores are modified, they are surrounded by dikes and canals, so Lubāns is the largest diked lake in Europe. Lubāna Wetland complex, located around the Lubāna Lake and covering 513,51 km2, is a unique nature complex of European and world significance. 225 species of birds have been registered in the surroundings, 51 of these species are entered in the Latvian Red Book. It is evidenced by 27 human settlements of the Stone Age found by archeologists. It is believed that the wetland of Lubāna Lake was one of the largest Neolithic amber-processing centers in the area.
In addition to the Tourist Information Center in Madona, there is also the Information Center of Lubāns Wetland established next to the Lake Lubāns. Since the summer of 2014, the new owners take an active part in the environmental cleanup and development of nature tourism. The offering includes several recreational and entertainment options, binoculars for observation of the surrounding territory and birds, rental of canoes, events and hikes through the Swamp Teirumnieki, delicious picnic with fish from Lake Lubans and accommodations. Moreover, here you can also get updated information on the tourism options in Madone district. Since the winter of 2015, it is possible to rent here the first official ice fishing cabin in Latvia.
